Wednesday, 15th October I got up early today with the excitement of our pending trip to the Galapagos Islands. Being up early and having done most of my packing the night before I went for a wander to find a coffee in Guayaquil. We are staying very close to the airport, you can literally see […]

Sunday, 12th October We woke up with sore legs after our hike yesterday. That is as far as we have walked in one day on this trip and I think and our bodies are letting us know it. We got up at 6am with the bus back to Latacunga leaving at 6:30am from outside the […]

Friday, 10th October We started the day later today as the bus we would catch to Chugchilan, which would be our base for the next two days, didn’t leave until 11:30am. We had our breakfast and checked out which included leaving our large bags in storage at the hostel and taking only small backpacks. The […]

Tuesday, 7th October Our hostel includes a complimentary continental breakfast and all you can drink coffee (not that much as it turns out before you start to tremble). I had breakfast outside in the courtyard out the back of the hostel then we asked some advice on what we could do whilst staying here. Latacunga […]

Tuesday, 9th September Today we started our journey to Corcovado National Park, in the south west of Costa Rica, which meant an overnight stay in Puerto Jimenez on the way. Unless you want to pay US$80 for a cab ride over the last stretch of road the cheaper alternative is to take the US$10 collectivo […]

Wednesday, 3rd September 2014 A frequent occurrence of this trip, especially in Costa Rica, are the early mornings and today was no exception as we caught a taxi to the ‘Gran Caribe’ bus terminal at 5:30am to give us enough time to get a ticket and sort ourselves out for the 6:30am bus to Cariari, […]

Saturday, 31st August 2014 We got up at 4:30am and after foregoing showering and wearing the same clothes as yesterday (couldn’t be bothered to take anything out of our packs), we walked the 10 minutes from our hostel to the Pulmitan bus station. We are good at getting places early and had about 40 minutes […]

Wednesday, 27th August Today we got up lazy as usual and had some eggs, toast and coffee. Not sure if the coffee is local or not but it tastes good, just black (cafe negro). There are coffee farms on the sides of the volcano here so I expect the beans are local. We might visit […]

Sunday, 24th August We got up hot and sweaty with Granada not letting us lie in comfort. It also didn’t help that there was a power cut in the night that had not been rectified so the fan stopped working in the night and wasn’t able to cool us down in the morning. I got […]

We have seen some amazing wildlife during the first half of our trip, here is a review of those I managed to capture on film. A highlight was definitely seeing bears in North America. After so many signs warning us of their presence throughout Canada and North America we finally saw some black bears and grizzlies […]

Tuesday, 5th August We got next to no sleep last night due to the combination of a screeching cat, noisy neighbours, church bells for to a 6:30am mass right opposite our window, a mis-informed cockerel crowing at 3am and a roadside mechanic at around 5am. So, more than a little tired we eventually gave up […]

Here are some videos of us riding an airboat through the mangroves and grasslands of the Everglades and some alligators we saw on the drive to Miami, through the Everglades National Park and the Big Cypress National Preserve.

Friday, 27/06/14 We set off after breakfast with Orlando, Florida, our goal for the night. We left South Carolina and entered Georgia, stopping at Savannah for a wander and a snack (some pecan pie and a cup of coffee). Savannah was a nice town, seemed as though it was bigger than Charleston and not quite […]

Here are some videos of our time in Yellowstone National Park; some of the driving, wildlife and natural wonders of this park. This was our last hope of seeing a bear and we were not disappointed as you can see. It seems as though this is the National Park to go to for wildlife watching […]

Our stay in Thermopolis being brief we packed up and left early to make for Denver. The drive took us back through the Wind River Canyon, one of the most scenic drives we have done so far. Along the way there are roadside signs pointing to the rock next to the road giving you the […]

Today we made for Thermopolis and our motel for the night before we got nearer to Denver. To get there we drove through Yellowstone National Park although this time the only wildlife we saw was Bison on the way. Yellowstone leads directly into Grand Teton National Park via the South entrance so we had a lovely […]

We landed into Salt Lake City airport after a small delay in taking off from Las Vegas which also included around 5 queues to actually get to the gates before take-off. Getting a shuttle to our rental car office, Fox, we had another day as with a staff of 10 on duty only 1 could […]

Day 1 Today we left San Francisco for the wilds of the Yosemite National Park. Our accommodation was booked at June Lake, beyond Yosemite and nearer to Inyo National Park but the drive there allowed us to explore Yosemite Valley and the Tioga Pass. Along the way we stopped to help a stranded family in […]

Day 6: Banff Using our lodgings, Banff Boundary Lodge (actually in Harvie Heights, not Banff as the name suggests), as a base we explored the local area. It didn’t snow overnight and the weather was quite clear although cold. We decided to go on a small hike up to the Grassi Lake near to Canmore […]

Here are videos of the two Grizzly Bears that reside in the British Columbia Wildlife Park, Kamloops. They are called Dawson and Knute (not sure which is which) and came to the park in spring 2011, from the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. They are siblings and are orphaned cubs that  now call the Park home.

Here are a few videos from our road trip with a post on ‘Road Trip – Part 2’ still to come. #1 – Hiking along the Grassi Lakes Trail near Canmore. This was a magical trail to hike in the snow, several feet deep in places. At the top of the trail there are several small lakes, […]

Day 1: Vancouver to Kelowna (388km, 4h15min) We set off from Vancouver around midday of Saturday after a cooked breakfast and some road-snack shopping. Getting out of Vancouver was  a bit of a trial with limited right-sided driving experience and google maps telling us to drive around on circles but we eventually ended up on the […]

We’ve been in Canada now for 4 days staying with Bec and Doug in Kitsilano, a suburb close to the centre of Vancouver. We’ve taken advantage of their hospitality and the opportunity to not do too much thinking here, just taking it easy seeing the city and planning our next moves. It’s also taken us […]

Now in Mirissa after an amazing few days in Tangalle. We had great fun at the wedding of Deshika and Dimi and sampled probably our last taste of luxury at the Amenwella resort before returning to the life of a backpacker. We’ve loved the beaches right on the doorstep of where we’ve stayed (Green Gardens […]

We arrived in Tissamaharama yesterday afternoon from Haputale and checked into our guesthouse, La Safari Inn. We got a decent room for a good price but its fairly obvious people only come here for the safari, there’s not much else to do here. We left for our safari to Yala National Park at 5am with […]
