This is a short video of our view from the Amtrak Cascades train as we passed by Puget Sound on the way from Seattle to Portland. It’s worth asking which side has the view as you can see! The mountain range in the background is the Cascades.

We left Vancouver at 3:30pm and were in Seattle by 8pm having successfully traversed the border. Doug drove us down as him and Bec joined us in Seattle before we say farewell on Sunday, they head back to Vancouver and we proceed southwards. We made a beeline straight for the baseball as we had tickets […]

The Seattle Mariners going for a grand slam against the Texas Rangers. From Wikipedia: ‘In baseball, a grand slam is a home run hit with all three bases occupied by baserunners (“bases loaded”), thereby scoring four runs—the most possible in one play.’ They did it and went 3-up, running out eventual winners by 6-3.

Crossed the land border into the United States of America yesterday evening. First stop, a night of baseball with the Seattle Mariners playing the Texas Rangers. It was college night so quite rowdy and we ate a baseball hat full of nachos. The first time we’ve eaten anything out of a hat, as far as […]

Day 6: Banff Using our lodgings, Banff Boundary Lodge (actually in Harvie Heights, not Banff as the name suggests), as a base we explored the local area. It didn’t snow overnight and the weather was quite clear although cold. We decided to go on a small hike up to the Grassi Lake near to Canmore […]

Here are videos of the two Grizzly Bears that reside in the British Columbia Wildlife Park, Kamloops. They are called Dawson and Knute (not sure which is which) and came to the park in spring 2011, from the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. They are siblings and are orphaned cubs that  now call the Park home.

Here are a few videos from our road trip with a post on ‘Road Trip – Part 2’ still to come. #1 – Hiking along the Grassi Lakes Trail near Canmore. This was a magical trail to hike in the snow, several feet deep in places. At the top of the trail there are several small lakes, […]

Driving over the Rogers Pass (elevation 1,330m), a high mountain pass through the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia used by the Trans-Canada Highway. Rogers Pass is in the heart of Glacier National Park. This was on the drive from Kelowna to Banff.

Day 1: Vancouver to Kelowna (388km, 4h15min) We set off from Vancouver around midday of Saturday after a cooked breakfast and some road-snack shopping. Getting out of Vancouver was  a bit of a trial with limited right-sided driving experience and google maps telling us to drive around on circles but we eventually ended up on the […]

We’ve been in Canada now for 4 days staying with Bec and Doug in Kitsilano, a suburb close to the centre of Vancouver. We’ve taken advantage of their hospitality and the opportunity to not do too much thinking here, just taking it easy seeing the city and planning our next moves. It’s also taken us […]

We were lucky that our flights to Canada worked out so that we had an overnight stopover in London enabling us to go to St. Albans for the night, also coinciding with my sisters birthday. So…. roast dinner when we arrived and massive fry up the morning after before the flight to Vancouver.

Now in Mirissa after an amazing few days in Tangalle. We had great fun at the wedding of Deshika and Dimi and sampled probably our last taste of luxury at the Amenwella resort before returning to the life of a backpacker. We’ve loved the beaches right on the doorstep of where we’ve stayed (Green Gardens […]
